Leaking roof in Sheffield

Roof leaks in Sheffield caused by wind driven rain

Strong winds and heavy rain are typical of autumn and winter (even summertime!) weather conditions in the UK. During a severe gale with lashing rain you might notice a damp spot has formed on your ceiling. Strangely though during less strong wind and heavy rain thereafter there was no sign of the damp patch worsening. So why now during gale force wind and lashing rain does your roof suddenly leak, but it doesn’t do so in ‘normal’ wet and windy weather conditions?
Customers will often contact our office to report leaks that have come about after a storm with wind driven heavy rain. We hear from them that an area of a ceiling has become damp, but it’s not every time that it rains.
The thing is that rain when propelled by wind often blowing across horizontally can cause water to enter the building in ways that may not be possible if wind was taken out of the equation.
Wind driven rain can make its way past/ beneath not only roofing slates, tiles and felt but also lead flashings and valleys, skylight windows and chimneys etc. It may enter through roof or ridge vents, under the eaves tiles or the roofs side verge tiles even. The rainwater having found its way into the building will then drip onto the ceilings leaving them damp and stained to begin with. Constant dripping water onto a plaster ceiling will eventually crack it and bring it down potentially.
This is where having a qualified roofer to inspect your roof regularly or after strong wind and lashing rain to provide routine maintenance is the best preventive measure. If your property does sustain damage from wind driven rain, please be sure to have the repairs done as soon after the internal water damage is noticed as is possible. The longer the problem remains without repair, the greater the risk of more extensive damage taking place i.e. wood rot, mould, and severe water damage to plaster and decorations etc. Your wallet will thank you.
